These are Motorola Edge and Motorola Edge +

I was hoping for such a return to the game. For the first time in years, Motorola releases high-end equipment to the market and does so with a powerful blow. These are Motorola Edge and Motorola Edge +.

"Guess who came back?", Sang Eminem in 2002. Motorola came back and can also sing about this return aloud, because there is something to brag about. After years of pause in launching "real flagships," someone at Motorola said No pasarán! , stamped his foot and ordered to hit with all his might.

And they hit me.

Motorola Edge Plus is a complete smartphone.

Motorola Edge +

The specification is almost free of weaknesses:

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 5G
  • RAM: 12 GB LPDDR5
  • Memory: 256 GB UFS 3.0
  • Screen: 6.7 "OLED, FHD +, 90 Hz, HDR 10+, aspect ratio 2: 1
  • Battery: 5000 mAh with 18 W charging, 15 W wireless charging and back charging
  • Dimensions: 161.1 x 71.4 x 9.6 mm
  • Weight: 203 g

With such parameters you can only pick up on small things. For example, the fact that fast charging is not as fast as e.g. in Xiaomi Mi 10 or Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. Or that the phone has only one SIM card slot. Or the fact that officially Motorola Edge + does not have an IP certificate, but company representatives ensure that the phone has been constructed to protect the interior from flooding or sanding.

Motorola Edge +

To all of the above numbers should be added smaller, but no less important elements of the specification. Like stereo speakers that were developed in cooperation with Waves, as well as software optimization for a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Yes, Motorola Edge + is one of the last - next to the upcoming LG V60 - high-end phones that offers a physical headphone jack.

Motorola Edge +

Of course, the new Motorola is also equipped with 5G connectivity, NFC and all the latest connectivity standards, such as Wi-Fi 6 or Bluetooth 5.1. This is Motorola - when it comes to the quality of data transmission, we can expect the best.

I look at the screen and I don't know what to think about it.

Either Motorola Edge + was born in the company's research and development department a long time ago, or Motorola intentionally goes against the tide.

While manufacturers are gradually withdrawing from the use of curved displays, Motorola Edge + curves the screen even more. The display received the name "Endless Edge" and looks stunning on promotional graphics. Frames are almost imperceptible, and the display fills the entire front of the device.

Motorola Edge +

The problem is that while curved screens look beautiful on promotional graphics, they are usually tedious and not very useful in everyday use. Motorola claims, however, that it has a way in the form of thoughtful solutions in the software.

A new Motorola overlay debuts with Motorola Edge +. Don't worry, it will still visually resemble pure Android; nowhere are all the useful gestures or the best always-on display mode on the market. However, there are two big news: gaming mode, automatically recognizing the moment of the start of the game and the Edge Touch function.

Motorola Edge +

It is she who is to ensure that the curved edge is useful. Motorola will use the edge in several ways - just like in many other smartphones, you'll be able to find a "bubble" with shortcuts to frequently used applications. It will also be possible to use the edge for quick actions, e.g. downloading the notification bar. The edge will also illuminate with changing colors during charging, indicating the battery charge level.

After all, you can also turn off the edges when using some applications. Let's do it - a frequent problem in smartphones with curved edges is watching video with subtitles, because the subtitles die on the edge and thus become illegible. In Motorola Edge + we can choose in which applications the edge should be inactive and then, e.g. Netflix will be displayed only on the flat part of the screen. Very thoughtful, but how practical will it be, we will only find out during testing.

I am happy that Motorola has decided to use the 2: 1 ratio in its new smartphone. It is true that the phone is marginally higher than other devices with a screen of this diagonal, but it is a few mm narrower than them, which should translate into more convenient one-hand operation, and thus - less chance of accidentally touching the edges .

The camera at Motorola Edge + is to be a turning point in the company's history.

Historically, Motorola has always offered miserable cameras. Even on your most expensive phones. It was possible to praise every single element of the company's smartphones, but the camera constantly remained the weakest point. Now this is to change.

Motorola Edge Plus has a quad camera layout on board:

  • Main 108 Mpix sensor with f / 1.8 wide angle lens
  • 16 Mpix sensor with ultrawide f / 2.2 lens and Macro Vision mode
  • 8 megapixel sensor with f / 2.4 telephoto lens and 3x optical magnification
  • ToF sensor for depth detection

In the front we have a 25 Mpix camera with f / 2.0 lens.

The camera layout looks impressive, but hardware has never been a problem on Motorola smartphones. The problem has always been software and image processing after taking a picture. Now Motorola boasts that developers have devoted a lot of time and money to refine the camera software and give users a device that produces top results.

Along with the press materials, I received several sample photos taken by Motorola Edge +. Of course, we will conduct our own camera test, but if this phone can really take pictures like the ones below, then we are dealing with one of the best optical systems on the market:

Here we can see an example photo taken using the night mode:

Here the same shot, but without night mode:

Motorola Edge strives to give as much as possible at the most reasonable price.

Motorola Edge

Alongside Motorola Edge +, its slightly poorer version debuts today, without a plus. Visually, both smartphones are virtually indistinguishable. They have roughly the same dimensions and almost the same screen. The difference is only visible under the hood:

  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 5G
  • RAM: 6 GB LPDDR5
  • Memory: 128 GB
  • Screen: 6.7 "OLED, FHD +, 90 Hz, HDR, 2: 1 aspect ratio
  • Battery: 4500 mAh with 15 W charging, no wireless charging
  • Dimensions: 161.6 x 71.1 x 9.29 mm
  • Weight: 188 g

A few minor differences can also be seen outside the numbers. We don't have a new Wi-Fi 6 standard here, although we have Bluetooth 5.1. Instead of three microphones for calls and recordings, we have two microphones.

Instead, we have a hybrid card tray that can hold either two SIM cards or a SIM card and an SD card. Motorola Edge also meets the IP54 standard, which makes it officially splashproof.

The arrangement of cameras in Motorola Edge is also changing:

  • Main 64 Mpix sensor with f / 1.8 wide angle lens
  • 16 Mpix sensor with ultrawide f / 2.2 lens and Macro Vision mode
  • 8 megapixel sensor with f / 2.4 telephoto lens and 2x optical zoom
  • ToF sensor for depth detection

The front camera is the same 25 Mpix sensor as in the more powerful Motorola Edge +.

There are many differences between two smartphones, but at the same time you can also see that Motorola tried its best to cut only what it is easy to do without. Functionally, Motorola Edge still remains a smartphone with great power and great possibilities.

Prices? Stick to the chairs.

Both phones will go on sale in May, the availability of specific copies will vary depending on the country of release. Prices in euros are as follows:

  • Motorola Edge +, available in Smoky Sangria and Thunder Gray, will cost 1199 euros.
  • Motorola Edge, available in Solar Black and Midnight Magenta, will cost 599 euros.

We also know the Polish price of Motorola Edge. The phone on the Vistula will debut in May, at a price ... 2999 PLN We do not yet know the official price and date of Motorola Edge Plus debut, but it can be safely assumed that we will pay about 6000 PLN for it.

If Motorola Edge were priced in a similar way to the European one, that is at a maximum price of PLN 2,699, I would say that it is priced reasonably in this system. Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Pro or Oppo Reno 3 Pro cost very similar money and offer very similar possibilities. PLN 2999 for such a phone is definitely too high a price. Especially when we look at the prices of the new OnePlus 8.

The price of Motorola Edge + for this escapes all logic. However powerful a complete smartphone might be, Motorola takes great risks putting it in a row with the absolutely most expensive phones on the market. We will buy Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra for PLN 6,000. We will buy an iPhone 11 Pro . You can have any other Android smartphone, basically it's even two!

I do not think Motorola is focused on the large number of copies sold of this model, but even as a show of strength and flagship ship in the company's fleet, Motorola Edge + seems to be far too expensive.

And since Motorola Edge + competes with the best, most expensive smartphones, it must also be ready for very harsh criticism and a thorough judgment on whether it is worth so much money.

However, we will find out about this only when Motorola Edge + comes to us for testing.

I've been waiting for Motorola's top smartphone for at least 5 years.

Moto X Style still remains my favorite Android smartphone in history and I'm still waiting for a worthy successor who will grab my heart as much as the old flagship of the company.

I have no doubt that Motorola Edge + will be a mighty, all-inclusive smartphone. For € 1,199, however, there must be more than just the sum of the components. I hope I can find it during the tests.
